The Waiting Room

An original, paid for gradually, owned completely. It comes home with you after the first payment.

Why it exists

The thing people most often say in front of my work is “I wish I could afford one.” I spent twenty-six years as a volunteer lifeboatman, broke for a fair bit of it, so I know what that sounds like from the inside. I didn’t want money to be the thing that stopped a painting going where it was wanted.

What it is

A standing order, nothing more complicated than that. You choose a painting, set up a monthly payment for whatever you can manage, and it comes to live with you straight away. The painting comes off the website the day you start.

The terms

From £30 a month. No interest, ever. No credit check, no contract, no deadline — you pay until it’s paid, and you can take a month off if life gets in the way. The painting goes home with you after the first payment, framed, with its TOAT provenance certificate. When the payments are done, the certificate records that it’s entirely yours.

In 1945 Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, wrote to Allied officers in prison camps whose watches had been confiscated and offered to replace them: pay whatever you can, whenever you can, after the war. The Waiting Room works the same way. Miserable people don’t buy paintings, and people who buy paintings don’t let you down.

How it works

  1. Choose your painting. Anything on the site that isn’t already sold.
  2. Message me. We agree a monthly figure that suits you, and you set up the standing order from your own bank.
  3. It comes home with you. Framed to your taste, TOAT fitted, sent as soon as the first payment lands.
  4. Pay at your own pace. No interest, no penalty for paying quickly or slowly — it’s yours either way.
