Running the gauntlet
Original oil on canvas
42 × 30 cm (framed)
White tray frame
Painted 2025
Painted en plein air at Rottingdean, this A3 oil captures waves striking the Undercliff sea wall and exploding upward in sheets of spray, with reflected light pooling across the walkway below. Figures move through the scene as the weather closes in, giving the piece its sense of energy, exposure, and scale.
The painting was created directly from life, standing in sea spray as conditions changed, and retains the immediacy and physicality of that experience. The shifting reflections, movement of people, and violence of the water combine to evoke the particular drama of the Undercliff in rough weather.
This piece was originally purchased, but the collector later chose to commission the same subject at twice the scale. As a result, this original A3 version is now available.
This original A3 oil sketch is fitted with a TOAT (Tradable Original Art Token), preserving its provenance and offering future tradability within a growing collector community. You may list it for sale immediately after purchase under the TOAT Sketches scheme.
