Brighton Chamber Choir
St Luke’s, Brighton — Christmas Concert
Following an evening of Christmas music performed by the Brighton Chamber Choir at St Luke’s Church, I found myself standing at the back of the nave as the sound filled the space and slowly gathered weight and darkness beneath the vaulted arches.
The building, the voices, and the movement of people coalesced into something quietly dramatic — light pooling around columns, figures dissolving into shadow, the choir glowing at the far end of the church. This painting was produced throughout this incredible concert, allowing the atmosphere of the concert to lead the brush.
The result is a gothic, immersive A3 oil sketch, concerned as much with sound, scale, and presence as with architecture — a moment suspended between reverence and motion.
