So a little context here. ‘Comedian’ is a 2019 artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. It appears as a fresh banana affixed to a wall with duct tape. As a work of conceptual art, it consists of a certificate of authenticity with detailed diagrams and instructions for its proper display.
It was sold to cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun for $6.2 million in November 2024. Soon afterward, he ate the banana onstage, comparing it to a crypto asset and saying, "the real value is the concept itself".
Now I’m not grumpy about this kind of thing, I exhibit mild annoyance that it is often wilfully mis-sold as the big brother of what I do (it isn’t). I insist on the artist cracking a smile and would like to offer my congratulations to Maurizio for the sheer size of his big brass balls! I reserve a little more ire for Justin Sun for not doing something a little more humanitarian with such a sum if he clearly has so much surplus, but maybe he gives boat-loads to the local orphanage, who am I to judge? 
Anyway. I proudly present ‘Painting of a Banana taped to a wall’, inspired by this culturally significant caper. It differs from ‘Comedian’ in that it is a painting of a Banana which I would argue will outlast the actual fruit. I’ve used framing tape because I’ve used all my duct tape on my leaking roof. I’ve reduced the price to exactly half of Maurizios piece, in order to help make the outlay justifiable to an understandably outraged spouse. With £3.1million I believe I could stretch to a couple of different taping options depending on your wall texture. Hopefully there will be some left over to create ‘Non leaky roof’ later in the year.
